On Saturday state Sen. Anthony Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) was among 93 international honorees to receive an Ellis Island Medal of Honor, given to individuals for their inspired service and contributions to the nation, in a ceremony at the national monument.

For 34 years, the Ellis Island Honor Society has bestowed the award on presidents, politicians, celebrities, dignitaries and extraordinary citizens alike. Past honorees include Ronald Reagan, Joe Biden, Coretta Scott King, Lee Iacocca and Muhammad Ali.

California State Senator Anthony J. Portantino was awarded with the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor Award by the Ellis Island Honor Society on Saturday. He joined 92 awardees from around the county “whose accomplishments in their field and inspired service to our nation are worthy of commendation.”

On Saturday, California State Senator Anthony J. Portantino, who represents Pasadena in Sacramento, was awarded with the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor Award by the Ellis Island Honor Society. He joined 92 awardees from around the county “whose accomplishments in their field and inspired service to our nation are worthy of commendation.” Senator Portantino joins notable Italian Americans Frank Sinatra, Joe Torre and Lee Iacocca as recipients of the Medal of Honor.

State Sen. Anthony Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) said his passion for spreading the word of the Armenian Genocide comes from his childhood, when his Italian immigrant mother told the horrors of the orphaned Armenian children.

“While survivors suffered with trauma, they shared with the world the inhumane crimes they witnessed and endured,” Portantino said. “I feel connected to those stories.”
