A bill that would allow Glendale officials to repurpose $27 million in bonds originally intended for redevelopment projects to build affordable housing cleared its first state Senate committee this week.

On Wednesday, the Government and Finance Committee voted 5-2 to advance Senate Bill 532, sponsored by the city of Glendale and authored by state Sen. Anthony Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge). It will now head to the Housing Committee for a hearing on April 22.

We’ve all seen children, often very young children, hunched over from heavy book backpacks, shuffling along sidewalks just an hour or two after sunrise on their way to school.

They look like zombies, and that’s because California’s public schools often begin their classes so early in the morning that many of them have had much less sleep than their still-growing bodies demand.

Sleep deprivation among children and adolescents is a public health calamity, as medical and scientific authorities have repeatedly warned.

Sacramento, California – On Tuesday, SB 172, Senator Anthony J. Portantino’s firearm storage bill, passed the Senate Human Services Committee.  SB 172 proposes to resolve the problem of improper and dangerous firearm storage in residential homes and residential senior care facilities.  Unsafe storage puts guns in the wrong hands and far too often leads to potentially deadly situations.  The vast majority of accidental firearm deaths, suicides and senseless acts of violence among children are related to easy access of firearms.

Sacramento, California – Today, SB 532, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge), passed the Senate Government and Finance Committee. Senator Portantino introduced SB 532 at the request of the City of Glendale, to help free up $27 million dollars of dormant Redevelopment bonds for use to build affordable housing.  Mayor Ara Najarian and Director of Community Development Philip Lanzafame flew to Sacramento to offer testimony on behalf of the effort.
