Sacramento, CA – Senate Bills 1147, 1100, 607, and 551, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), have been signed into law. SB 1147 requires the study of the health impacts of microplastics in drinking water. SB 1100 addresses discrimination against individuals who do not have driver’s licenses, and SB 607 is aimed at combatting the opioid crisis by requiring prescribers of controlled substances containing an opioid to discuss dangers of opioids with all patients. Finally, SB 551 addresses reporting practices across plastic beverage manufacturing companies’ product lines.

Sacramento, CA – Senator Anthony Portantino (D – Burbank) continued his successful career of supporting students and public education with a slate of bills signed by the Governor. Senate Bills 997, 445 and 691 join SB 98 as critical education bills, all of which are now state law. SB 997 helps tackle the opioid epidemic and drug related overdoses among our youth by allowing students to carry fentanyl test strips and Narcan. SB 445 addresses the language barrier many parents have with reading Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and better empowers parents to advocate for their children. SB 691 creates a more collaborative and successful approach to address truancy. SB 98, which was signed last week, addresses the transition in education funding from attendance based to enrollment based.

Sacramento, CA – Senate Bill 53, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), was signed into law by Governor Newsom. The bill expands on Senator Portantino’s earlier firearm safe storage efforts by expanding storage requirements to thwart gun violence, suicide, unintentional shootings, and theft in homes where a firearm is present.

The bill highlights the significance of public school funding models based on enrollment rather than attendance and kick starts much needed research on establishing a more equitable funding framework for our public schools.
