Ambassador Baibourtian Joins Senator Portantino in Sacramento for Armenian Trade Office Bill Hearing

Sacramento, California – Today, SB 302 authored by State Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D–La Cañada Flintridge) passed the Assembly Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy Committee. The bill seeks to reestablish the trade office between California and Armenia which was ended in 2008.   Ambassador Armen Baibourtian flew to Sacramento to offer his testimony in support of SB 302 as it would be the first international trade office reestablished since California ended the program.

Massis Post: Governor Newsom Signs State Budget with $5 Million for Armenian American Museum

GLENDALE – California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the 2019-2020 state budget with $5 million included for the Armenian American Museum. The 2019-2020 budget provides $4 million in new funding for the museum and $1 million in reallocated funding. The approval brings the State of California’s total investment in the museum to $8 million.

USA Today: Gun advocacy groups sue California over new law that bans firearms sales to 'law-abiding adults' under 21

Several gun advocacy groups filed a lawsuit this week challenging new California rules banning the sale of firearms to people under 21, arguing that people ages 18 to 20 years are adults with the legal right to bear arms. 

The lawsuit, filed Monday in San Diego, targets multiple California laws, including one introduced last year by Democratic state Sen. Anthony Portantino following the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

$27 Million Glendale Affordable Housing Effort Passes Another Committee

Sacramento, California – Today, SB 532 authored by State Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D–La Cañada Flintridge) passed the Assembly Local Government Committee. Senator Portantino introduced SB 532 at the request of the City of Glendale. After the dissolution of Redevelopment Agencies (RDAs), Glendale was left with $27 million dollars in bond proceeds but precluded from using these funds for housing.  SB 532 will give Glendale the ability to use these locally derived bond funds exclusively for affordable housing.
