Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) sent a letter to the California Department of Education detailing his concerns regarding the current draft of the department’s Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum.

Sacramento, California – Senator Anthony J Portantino’s (D - La Cañada Flintridge) is pleased that the student suicide prevention effort created by SB 972 is in effect for the 2019/2020 school year.  

“As a father, I don’t want to ever read another story in the paper about a teen who took his or her life.  I am hopeful that for students struggling with depression and grappling with suicidal thoughts, having this resource readily available will save a life.  It’s a simple idea that should have a significant impact,” commented Senator Portantino.

SB 600 requires an individual or group health care service plan (health plan) contract or health insurance policy, as specified, to include coverage for standard fertility preservation services when a medically necessary treatment may cause iatrogenic infertility to an enrollee or insured. States that the provisions of this bill are declaratory of existing law.

Sacramento, California – Today, SB 328, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) passed the State Assembly Education Committee.  SB 328 addresses the significant public health crisis of sleep-deprived teens by requiring high schools in California to start no earlier than 8:30 AM and middle schools to begin no earlier than 8:00 AM. The California State PTA and Start School Later Ink are sponsors of SB 328. The bill has garnered strong support from medical professionals, researchers, law enforcement and education advocates.
