Sacramento, CA – Senate Bill 971, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), passed the Assembly Higher Education Committee today. The measure will make higher education more affordable for low income refugees by exempting them from paying the nonresident tuition fee. The Senator was inspired to author the bill when Glendale Community College students raised tuition funds to help students who were displaced from Artsakh by Azerbaijan

Sacramento, California – Senate Bill 607, authored by State Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), passed the Assembly Business and Professions Committee today. The measure aims to combat the ongoing opioid crisis by requiring prescribers of controlled substances containing an opioid to discuss dangers of opioids with all patients.

Sacramento, CA – Senate Bill 53, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee today. The bill expands on Senator Portantino’s earlier firearm safe storage law by expanding efforts to thwart suicide, unintentional shootings, and theft. Senator Portantino’s prior legislation, SB 172, was passed and signed in 2019. SB 53 builds on that effort and will make Californians even more safe. President Biden is modeling a national safe storage effort on SB 172 and Senator Portantino has been invited by the White House to promote safe storage efforts.
