Sacramento, California – Senate Bill 607, authored by State Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), passed the Assembly Business and Professions Committee today. The measure aims to combat the ongoing opioid crisis by requiring prescribers of controlled substances containing an opioid to discuss dangers of opioids with all patients.

Sacramento, CA – Senate Bill 53, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee today. The bill expands on Senator Portantino’s earlier firearm safe storage law by expanding efforts to thwart suicide, unintentional shootings, and theft. Senator Portantino’s prior legislation, SB 172, was passed and signed in 2019. SB 53 builds on that effort and will make Californians even more safe. President Biden is modeling a national safe storage effort on SB 172 and Senator Portantino has been invited by the White House to promote safe storage efforts.

President/CEO Debra Manners and Chief Public Policy & Advocacy Officer Wendy Wang flew to Sacramento to attend the award luncheon and proudly represent the organization.

Pasadena, CA - In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI), Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank) recognized AAPI women, businesses and nonprofit organizations Friday, May 31st in Pasadena. The event highlighted the rich cultural heritage of the AAPI community and the achievements and contributions of the community’s leaders in the 25th Senate District.

Sacramento, CA – Earlier today, Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank) expressed concern regarding potential policy changes being implemented for loan-out corporations within the entertainment industry. In a letter to the California Employment Development Department (EDD), the Senator asked for clarification in regards to the policy changes and requested that the targeting of loan-out companies be suspended until an explanation was provided.
