Senator Portantino Honored by Hemophilia Council of California as Legislator of the Year
Sacramento, CA – Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank) was honored by the Hemophilia Council of California as Legislator of the Year. The award was presented to the Senator in Sacramento during the organization’s Legislative Day, which also marked Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month.
“I am grateful to receive the Legislator of the Year Award from the Hemophilia Council of California,” stated Senator Portantino. “It’s important that we work towards improving the quality of life for those affected by hemophilia by ensuring access to care. The Hemophilia Council is doing great advocacy work on this issue, especially with their Future Leaders initiative. ”
"We are pleased, during Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month, to honor Senator Anthony Portantino as our Legislator of the Year,” said Lynne Kinst, Executive Director of the Hemophilia Council of California. “Since the very beginning of his service in the Legislature, Senator Portantino has always been a friend to the bleeding disorders community, supporting efforts to raise awareness and working on policy issues that impact rare and chronic disease patients. In particular, he has been a strong supporter of our youth leadership initiative - Future Leaders - supporting their training and advocacy opportunities. It is critically important that the patient voice be at the center of the health policy debate, and Senator Portantino has always been a champion to amplify our voices."
The mission of the Hemophilia Council of California is to improve access to care and treatment options in order to advance the quality of life for people with bleeding disorders through advocacy, education, and outreach in collaboration with its founding member organizations. The organization’s Future Leaders Program provides leadership training and develops advocacy skills for teens affected by bleeding disorders. Leading up to Legislative Day, they find out more about their role in the government process. Future Leaders also learn to be effective advocates for themselves and their families.
