Senator Portantino Introduces Resolution to Establish Tap Water Day in California

Sacramento, California – Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution 55 (SCR 55), which establishes the first Thursday in May as Tap Water Day in the State of California. The measure celebrates and honors one of our most precious resources – drinking water. SCR 55 encourages Californians to support and value publicly supplied drinking water by using fountains and filling stations as their go to source of refreshment and invigoration.

“Clean drinking water is a basic human right and it’s important to make it more accessible for our communities,” stated Senator Portantino. “Water from a public drinking fountain or bottle filling station is far less expensive and healthier for the environment than plastic bottled water. Organizations like WeTap are doing the critical advocacy work to expand access to clean tap water and I appreciate their support on this resolution.”

SCR 55 encourages Californians to celebrate, support, trust, and value publicly supplied drinking water and use community drinking fountains and filling stations as one of the best and healthiest sources of drinking water, while protecting the environment.

“I am so happy that the California Senate unanimously supports safe, reliable and dependable public drinking water and public fountains,” commented Evelyn Wendel, Founder and Executive Director of WeTap. “Thank you Senator Portantino for your visions and successful efforts to help our communities across the state.”

Founded in 2008, WeTap.org is a nonprofit organization that makes community public drinking fountains easy to find and use by providing its mobile phone application and other educational technology.
