Senator Portantino Honors Pasadena Delta Sigma Theta Sorority as the 25th District Non-Profit of the Year

Sacramento, California – This week Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) nominated the Pasadena Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority as the Non-Profit of the Year for the 25th State Senate District.  Denise Jones, Juanita West Tillman and Vernetta Griffin flew to Sacramento to attend the award luncheon, proudly representing the Deltas.

“I am excited to honor the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for their outstanding record of community support,” stated Senator Portantino.  “They have contributed to the success and well-being of the community and improved the quality of life for local residents in the 25th Senate District. This is a well-deserving organization and I am proud to have Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in my district.  And, of course I am proud to have so many Delta friends and to wear red today in their honor,” he commented.

Pasadena Alumnae Chapter was chartered on January 27, 1961, by Ellen T. Law, Regional Director and Jeanne Noble, National President, in the home of Soror Gervaise Moore in Pasadena, California. Over the past forty years, Pasadena Alumnae contributed over $100,000 to the Pasadena Community including the Jackie Robinson Center, Healthy Babies Alliance of Greater Pasadena, Jackie Robinson Park, Pasadena Neighborhood Housing, YWCA and Pasadena Senior Center, as well as the City of Pasadena Northwest Commission, Community Health Alliance of Pasadena, and the Pasadena City College Library Foundation Black Heritage Room. Additionally, the Chapter has awarded over $380,000 of academic awards.

“The Pasadena Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is so honored to have been awarded the Nonprofit of the Year Award from State Senator Anthony Portantino,” stated Denise Jones, who is an active and dedicated member of the Pasadena Alumnae Chapter.  “Our organization is a public service entity dedicated to programs in the areas of educational development, economic development, international awareness, and involvement physical and mental health, as well as civic involvement.  Senator Portantino has been and continues to be a valued partner with enthusiastic support of our signature programs to address the unmet needs of our communities.  This is what makes this award so special to us.”

Each year, the California State Legislature celebrates Nonprofits Day in conjunction with the California Association of Nonprofits. Deserving nonprofits receive special public recognition during a ceremony in the State Capitol where they are honored for their exemplary community service.
