Senator Portantino Honors Friends In Deed as the 25th District Non-Profit of the Year

Sacramento, California – This week Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) nominated Friends In Deed, an organization based in Pasadena, as the Non-Profit of the Year for the 25th State Senate District.

“I am proud to honor Friends In Deed and my friend Rabbi Grater for their service and dedication to the community,” stated Senator Portantino. “For decades, they have worked to improve the quality of life for underserved residents in need in the 25th Senate District and taken a leadership role in ensuring their welfare.  This is a well-deserving organization and I am proud to have Friends In Deed in my district,” commented Senator Portantino.

Friends In Deed is a non-profit and interfaith organization located in Pasadena that provides supportive services to help homeless and at-risk individuals rebuild their lives. Through programs like the Food Pantry, they provide food assistance to low-income and no-income families in the greater Pasadena and Altadena areas. Their Bad Weather Shelter program provides shelter in Pasadena for individuals experiencing homelessness during the winter season. The organization’s program The Women’s Room (TWR) is the only organization in the San Gabriel Valley dedicated to serving women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

“We are completely blown away and humbled by this distinction,” stated Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater, Executive Director of Friends In Deed. “2020 presented unpredictable challenges to every aspect of our programs at Friends In Deed, and we were so blessed by the outpouring of local support along with the steadfast work of our staff, board, and volunteers. We are encouraged by this award as we continue this critical work for those most in-need within our community, and thank Senator Anthony Portantino for recognizing Friends In Deed.”
