Sacramento, CA – Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), joined advocates and lawmakers today to rally support for the restoration of more than $22 million in proposed cuts to state arts funding. The current budget proposal would implement a $10 million cut to the California Arts Council and eliminate $12.5 million in funding for SB 1116, legislation authored by Senator Portantino which created the performing arts Equitable Payroll Fund.

Sacramento, CA – Senate Bill 997, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), passed the Senator Floor. The bill helps tackle the opioid epidemic and drug related overdoses among our youth by allowing students to carry both fentanyl test strips and Narcan nasal product while on campus. The bill had its genesis during the Senator’s summer internship program, where interns have the opportunity to research subject areas and propose bill ideas directly to Senator Portantino.

Sacramento, CA – Senate Bill 971, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), passed the Senate Floor today. The measure would make higher education more affordable for low income refugees by exempting them from paying the nonresident tuition fee. The Senator was inspired to author the bill by students at Glendale Community College who raised tuition money to help students from Artsakh, who were forcibly displaced by Azerbaijan.

Sacramento, CA – Senate Bill 1128 passed the Senate floor today. The bill is authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank) and sponsored by Los Angeles City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto. SB 1128 seeks to combat human and sex trafficking and protect California’s youth from exploitation.
