On Tuesday, state Sen. Anthony Portantino, D-La Canada Flintridge, introduced fix-it legislation that would add the Arroyo Seco Tributary to the Upper Los Angeles River and Tributaries Working Group, which is headed up by the powerful Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.

“I am happy to help solve a problem raised by constituents and to underscore how important the Arroyo Seco Tributary is to the greater watershed,” Portantino said in a written statement.

Senator Anthony J. Portantino, who represents Pasadena in the California Senate, has introduced legislation that would include the Arroyo Seco Tributary in the Upper Los Angeles River and Tributaries Working Group plan – a revitalization plan to address the unique and diverse needs of the Upper Los Angeles River, the tributaries of the Pacoima Wash, Tujunga Wash, and Verdugo Wash, and the communities through which they pass.

Gov. Jerry Brown has signed into law whistleblower protections for Capitol staffers. Now, legislative employees  will have the same protections as all other state employees. But a question arises: Will the new law, which passed both Democrat-controlled houses without a dissenting vote, really make much of a difference?

A separate bill to do just that, SB 419 by Sen. Anthony Portantino, was approved by the Senate but is stalled in the Assembly.

California Teacher of the Year finalist Mandy Redfern, a kindergarten teacher at La Cañada Elementary School who advanced through the statewide competition, was in Sacramento Monday for a gala event capping the annual program presented by California Casualty and the California Teachers of the Year Foundation.

Sacramento, California- Senator Anthony J. Portantino had the honor to welcome Mandy R. Redfern, Ph.D., a 2018 California Teacher of the Year Finalist to the California State Senate.  Redfern and a slate of outstanding teachers were recognized at a reception in the Capitol on Monday night.
