Senator Portantino Presents Resolution Proclaiming May as National Bike Month in California

Sacramento, California Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), authored Senate Concurrent Resolution 67 (SCR 67), which proclaims May 2023 as National Bike Month in California. SCR 67 promotes cycling and creating bicycle-friendly communities in California and was presented on the Senate Floor today.

“I never thought I’d become a daily biker and then it happened. That’s why I am personally excited to mark May as Bike Month and take this opportunity to encourage the use of bicycles as a mode of transportation, stated Senator Portantino. “It is also important to promote safer streets, as we know bike-friendly communities help improve public health, traffic safety and the environment.”

National Bike Month was established in 1956 by the League of American Bicyclists. Today, millions of Americans use bicycles as an affordable, environmentally friendly mode of transportation. The goal of SCR 67 is to promote the benefits of bicycling and create bicycle-friendly communities that are safe and accessible to all. In addition to being healthier for our planet and reducing pollution and congestion, bicycles are healthy for people and can be an excellent tool for exercise and recreation.

"We are excited to see Bike Month recognized by the Senate. Biking is surging in popularity as a way to have fun, as a way to get great exercise, and as a form of transportation. Encouraging more people on bicycles is a great policy choice and something that should be celebrated," stated Marc Vukcevich, State Policy Advocate for Streets for All, a nonprofit organization that advocates for climate and transportation justice.

“The bicycle provides climate-friendly transportation and recreation for millions of Californians. CalBike applauds the Senate for recognizing bike riding as a way to foster health, joy, and connected communities,” commented Kevin Claxton, Interim Executive Director of CalBike, California’s statewide bicycle advocacy coalition.
