Senator Pérez calls on El Monte Union High School District Superintendent to resign following district’s sexual abuse judgment
SACRAMENTO – Senator Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena) calls on El Monte Union High School District (EMUHSD) Superintendent, Dr. Edward Zuniga, to resign and for the district’s Board of Trustees to bring in outside leadership following sexual abuse settlement with the California Department of Justice:
“The scope and gravity of the sexual abuse history inside the El Monte Union High School District (EMUHSD) is chilling and appalling. The Attorney General’s investigation and subsequent stipulated judgment is a major step toward accountability, however, it only looked back at a relatively small window of time that abuses and cover-ups had been occurring. In reality, there has been a caustic culture inside the district that has allowed pervasive sexual misconduct resulting in numerous students being permanently harmed by predators on the district’s payroll.
“I want to believe that the measures outlined in the Attorney General’s stipulated judgment and the ongoing oversight will be sufficient to protect students, but I cannot put my faith in that belief.
“Cultural change is needed at El Monte Union High School District and Rosemead High School immediately. It is time for new, outside leadership at this pivotal moment. For that reason, I am calling for the resignation of El Monte Union High School District Superintendent, Dr. Edward Zuniga. Students, parents and the survivors who bravely came forward deserve new leadership who will implement the measures outlined in the Attorney General’s stipulated judgment and faithfully deliver ongoing oversight to protect all students.
“I further call on the Board of Trustees to identify a new leader who comes from outside of the district. Fresh leadership will accelerate a new culture of student-centered protections and give the district the greatest chance to chart a new course and put this terrible era of abuse behind it.
“As Chair of the Senate Education Committee, I am committed to speaking out for institutional changes that protect students. It is why I authored SB 848, the Safe Learning Environments Act, which took effect on January 1 and will play a major role in protecting current and future students from sexual misconduct in all California schools.”

La Senadora Pérez Insta al Superintendente del Distrito Escolar de El Monte Union High School a Renunciar Tras la Sentencia por Abuso Sexual Contra el Distrito

SACRAMENTO – La Senadora Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena) insta al superintendente del Distrito de Escuelas Preparatorias El Monte Union (EMUHSD, por sus siglas en inglés), el Dr. Edward Zuniga, a renunciar, y a la Junta de Fideicomisarios del distrito a incorporar un liderazgo externo tras el acuerdo alcanzado sobre abuso sexual con el Departamento de Justicia de California:
"El alcance y la gravedad del historial de abusos sexuales dentro del Distrito Escolar de El Monte High School (EMUHSD), resultan escalofriantes e indignantes. La investigación del Fiscal General y la subsiguiente sentencia estipulada representan un paso importante hacia la rendición de cuentas; sin embargo, dicha investigación solo abarcó retrospectivamente un lapso relativamente breve durante el cual se produjeron los abusos y los encubrimientos. En realidad, ha existido dentro del distrito una cultura corrosiva que ha propiciado una conducta sexual indebida generalizada, lo cual ha tenido como consecuencia que numerosos estudiantes sufrieran daños permanentes a manos de depredadores que figuraban en la nómina del distrito.
"Quiero creer que las medidas descritas en la sentencia estipulada del Fiscal General y la supervisión continua serán suficientes para proteger a los estudiantes, pero no puedo depositar mi confianza en esa creencia.
"Se necesita un cambio cultural inmediato en el Distrito Escolar de El Monte Union High School y en Rosemead High School. Es momento de contar con un nuevo liderazgo externo en este momento crucial. Por esta razón, exijo la renuncia del Dr. Edward Zuniga, Superintendente del Distrito Escolar de El Monte Union High School. Los estudiantes, los padres y los sobrevivientes que valientemente dieron un paso al frente merecen un nuevo liderazgo que implemente las medidas estipuladas en la sentencia acordada con el Fiscal General y que ejerza fielmente una supervisión continua para proteger a todos los estudiantes.
"Asimismo, insto a la Junta de Fideicomisarios a identificar a un nuevo líder proveniente de fuera del distrito. Un liderazgo renovado acelerará el establecimiento de una nueva cultura de protección centrada en los estudiantes y brindará al distrito la mejor oportunidad de trazar un nuevo rumbo y dejar atrás esta terrible era de abusos.
"Como Presidenta del Comité de Educación del Senado, me comprometo a abogar por cambios institucionales que protejan a los estudiantes. Por ello fui autora del proyecto de ley SB 848, la Ley de Entornos de Aprendizaje Seguros, la cual entró en vigor el 1° de enero y desempeñará un papel fundamental en la protección de los estudiantes actuales y futuros contra la conducta sexual indebida en todas las escuelas de California."
