Senator Sasha Renée Pérez issues statement on the murder of Charlie Kirk
SACRAMENTO – Senator Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena) has issued the following statement on the political murder of Charlie Kirk:
“The murder of conservative activist and influencer Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University is a deeply disturbing tragedy that goes against all that our nation stands for.
“I am deeply worried about the direction our nation is headed. Extremism is taking root in our democracy with increasing gun violence against people involved in political life and at school campuses. Just three months ago, we witnessed the assassination of Minnesota’s Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, and the attempted killing of Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman. Yesterday, at around the same time as the shooting of Charlie Kirk, a 16 year old opened fire at Evergreen High School in Colorado critically injuring 2 of his classmates.
“Gun violence has become so ubiquitous in the United States that mass shootings are now regular events in our news cycles. We cannot accept this as our new norm. All leaders, regardless of party, must come together to drive meaningful reforms to end gun violence once and for all.”
