Senator Pérez issues statement on the release of SEIU President from federal custody
SACRAMENTO – Senator Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena) issued the following statement on the release of SEIU President David Huerta from federal custody following his arrest at an immigration protest:
“SEIU President David Huerta’s detention resulted from the Trump administration’s targeted and aggressive action against our immigrant communities. While legally exercising his constitutional right to protest these unjust and cruel immigration raids, he was injured, arrested, and detained for several days. David’s release from custody today does not reduce the harm he suffered. The rule of law, including due process for members of the immigrant community, must be restored. At this critical moment in our nation, we must continue peacefully protesting against injustice.
“My office will continue to provide “Know Your Rights” information to constituents and pursue legislation such as SB 98, the SAFE Act, which will protect our vulnerable and cherished immigrant communities.”
