Senator Pérez Issues Statement on Governor Newsom’s May Revision to the State Budget

SACRAMENTOSenator Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena) issued the following statement on Governor Newsom’s May revision to the proposed 2025-2026 state budget:

“The Governor’s May revision is moving us in a constructive direction, even in the face extreme budget challenges made worse by the significant uncertainty stemming from actions in Washington D.C.

“As the Chair of the Senate Education Committee, I was pleased to see the Governor’s investments in TK-14 learning. I appreciate that the Governor heard our strong concerns about the proposed deep cuts to the UC and CSU campuses, and in response, has restored a significant portion of their funding in his revised plan but further investments will be needed to meet the needs of students and families across California. All of our schools, including our institutions of higher education, fuel California’s future and should not face disproportionate reductions in funding.

“We must also stand firm in support of fire victims and remain committed to supporting their recovery. This includes securing funding not only to help communities rebuild, but also to prevent future wildfire disasters.

“As lawmakers, we have much more work to do in the month ahead to meet our constitutional deadline to pass a balanced budget by June 15.

“Now is the time for advocates to continue to actively engage in the public process and share their funding priorities. If this budget is truly going to reflect our values, then it must be shaped by the voices and needs of all Californians.”
