Senator Pérez issues statement condemning abusive treatment of U.S. Senator Alex Padilla during Homeland Security briefing

SACRAMENTOSenator Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena) issued the following statement on the abusive treatment inflicted on U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-California) by Homeland Security agents:

“I am shocked by the abusive treatment imposed on democratically-elected U.S. Senator Alex Padilla. After Senator Padilla identified himself and was forcibly removed from the room, he was pushed to the ground and handcuffed by Secretary Kristi Noem’s agents. This is completely unacceptable and should never happen. But it’s part of an ever-escalating power grab by an authoritarian federal administration that illegally uses military force to engage in battle with everyday Californians for exercising their constitutional rights.”

“My office will continue to provide “Know Your Rights” information to constituents and advance legislation like SB 98, the SAFE Act, which will protect our vulnerable and cherished immigrant communities in educational settings.”
