Senator Pérez issues statement on arrest of SEIU President at immigration protest

SACRAMENTOSenator Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena) issued the following statement on the arrest of SEIU’s President at an immigration protest:

“I call for the immediate release from custody of SEIU President David Huerta who was harmed and arrested while protesting one of several immigration raids taking place today in Los Angeles County. David is a respected leader in California’s powerful and united labor movement.

“The reign of terror and merciless attacks on our immigrant communities by the Trump Administration must stop.

“Tearing families apart and demonstrating brute force against those who resist this tyrannical behavior only proves that this administration has no boundaries it won’t cross.

“Just this week, a Los Angeles County 4th grader disappeared from his school at the hands of immigration enforcement authorities and is facing deportation, according to media reports.

“We will not stand by and let this destruction of American values happen. We will fight back.

“Instead of terrorizing communities, our federal government should focus on serving communities and creating real immigration reform that will allow people to come out of the shadows and openly contribute to our nation’s prosperity.

“My office will continue to support our immigrant community and provide “Know Your Rights” information to constituents and advance legislation like SB 98, the SAFE Act, to protect our immigrant communities."
