Senator Pérez and Huntington Park Mayor Flores issue statements on the arrest of a suspect accused of impersonating ICE agent
SACRAMENTO – Senator Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena) has issued the following statement on Huntington Park Police arresting a man for allegedly impersonating a federal immigration agent:
“This arrest shows why we need to pass SB 805, the No Vigilantes Act,” said Senator Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena), who announced the legislation this week to expand California’s police impersonation laws. “We must protect Californians from police impersonations as we are seeing a rise in these incidents and heightened fear and confusion created by Trump’s aggressive immigration crackdown. The Huntington Park police initially thought the suspect’s car was a law enforcement vehicle until they ran the license plate. If actual law enforcement struggles to distinguish between real agents and dangerous criminals, then the general public has little chance of knowing who to trust without greater disclosure of law enforcement identification. The No Vigilantes Act would require any law enforcement operating in California to clearly display a name or badge number just as local police do. This is especially vital now as we’re seeing unidentifiable individuals claiming to be law enforcement exhibiting unprofessional behavior and unorthodox tactics.”
Huntington Park Mayor Arturo Flores issued the following statement on the impersonation arrest emphasizing the broader implications for communities like Huntington Park, where many families are of mixed immigration status:
“This isn’t just about one arrest—it’s about a pattern of encounters with individuals claiming to be federal agents who refuse to show identification, drive unmarked vehicles, and blur the line between law and intimidation,” said Mayor Flores. “We cannot allow fear to replace safety in our neighborhoods. Families in our city are living in fear—not because of the law, but because they can’t tell who’s behind the badge. We must restore trust, demand transparency, and stand for justice.”
