Sacramento, CA – Recognizing the severe shortage of healthcare providers in California, Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank) introduced Senate Bill 1041. The bill creates a pathway for foreign educated doctors to practice as physician assistants in California through a pilot program. The program establishes a partnership with Yerevan State Medical University to allow clinically trained healthcare professionals to work in healthcare at a time when our system needs more providers.

Sacramento, CA – Senate Bill 997 was introduced by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), which helps tackle the opioid epidemic and drug related overdoses among our youth by allowing students to carry fentanyl test strips and schools to provide Narcan nasal spray to students. The bill idea came out of the Senator’s summer internship program, where each intern in the Senate office has the opportunity to research subject areas and propose bill ideas directly to Senator Portantino.

Sacramento, CA – Today, Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank) joined the White House “Safer States” initiative to discuss California’s safe storage legislation. “Safer States” was organized by the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention to discuss legislation and policy centered around responsible gun ownership, strengthening background checks, and industry accountability, among other issues.

Sacramento, CA – Senate Bill 53, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), passed the Senate Floor today. The bill expands existing firearm safe storage laws by creating barriers to suicide, unintentional shootings, and theft. Senator Portantino was the author of California’s landmark safe storage law in 2019 – SB 172. SB 53 builds on that effort and will make Californians even more safe.
