SACRAMENTO—California State Senator Anthony J. Portantino is the Chair of the Senate Education Budget Sub-Committee with long and close ties to the Armenian American Community. In that capacity, he personally submitted two important education proposals on behalf of Armenian Californians into the California State Budget. This included six full tuition scholarships at Hastings College of Law for graduates of the American University of Armenia and a $500,000 state grant to create study guides for California schools to properly teach the Armenian Genocide.

The California State Senate has included a proposal by Senator Anthony J. Portantino to create 18 full tuition scholarships for HBCU students to attend UC Hastings College of Law.  Senator Portantino is the Chair of the Senate Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance.

State Senator Anthony Portantino, who represents Pasadena and the 25th Senate District, was appointed Monday as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, California Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins announced.

Portantino replaces Senator Ricardo Lara, from the 33rd Senate District, as Appropriations Committee chair. Lara will be the Chair of the Senate Committee on Labor and Industrial Relations.

State Sen. Anthony Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) has been appointed chair of the California Senate Appropriations Committee, a panel responsible for reviewing the fiscal impact of hundreds of Senate and Assembly bills each legislative session.

“I have a long working relationship with Senate Pro Tem Atkins, who’s a personal friend and a colleague, and I’m honored to have her trust,” the senator said in a phone interview Wednesday. “This puts me in a position to serve the 25th District as well as the state.”
