Senator Portantino Honored with Distinction in Higher Education Legacy

Sacramento, CA –Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank) was honored with a Distinction in Higher Education Legacy by the Campaign for College Opportunity for his leadership on higher education policy and commitment to increasing college access, success, and affordability. The Senator received the award during the Legislative Dean’s List Celebration in Sacramento.

“I am proud to be in a position to place college access and affordability at the forefront of California’s policy agenda,” stated Senator Portantino. “The dream of attending college should be attainable for all California students.  My father was the first in our family to go to college, so authoring legislation that helps current and future students attain their academic goals is personal. I am grateful to the Campaign for College Opportunity for their advocacy efforts and everything they do to help policy makers ensure success for students.”

Senator Portantino has long been a champion of policies that expand access to higher education. Last year, he successfully advocated for the expansion of Cal Grants for low income and foster youth students attending private nonprofit campuses. He has also authored legislation that increases access to transfer pathways and secures critical investments to increase four-year university and Cal Grant equity.

“Since he began his service in the legislature, Senator Portantino has been a champion for expanding college access, improving student success, and ensuring that the dream of college is affordable to all talented Californians,” stated Michele Siqueiros, President for Campaign for College Opportunity. “We are proud to have worked alongside him since 2007 and honored to celebrate him with this well-deserved legacy award.”
