Senator Portantino Statement on $6.8M Measure W Funding for Descanso Gardens 

Sacramento, CA – Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) issued the following statement on the recent approval of $6.8 million in Measure W funds by the Upper Los Angeles River Watershed Area Steering Committee for Descanso Gardens.  The funding will prioritize projects that address the environmental priorities of Los Angeles County and State of California such as sustainability, conservation, and growth.

“As a frequent visitor and supporter,  I appreciate Descanso Gardens for its one of a kind distinctive and multifaceted landscape, bridging culture and nature, as well as our past, present and future.  The Measure W funds are necessary for water infrastructure improvements included in the Master Plan.  Their recent Master Plan prioritizes to protect and enhance the Gardens’ natural assets through ecological restoration, enhanced water conservation, and habitat considerations.  In addition, the plan works towards long-term resilience by reducing off-site dependency on water.  The projects include water capture and reuse for irrigation, increased green space and shade, and an improved lake environment.  Descanso Gardens is an integral part of the community and I believe that these projects will greatly benefit the Gardens and the community for many years to come.  I was very pleased to have strongly advocated in support of Descanso Garden’s application for Measure W funding.”

Descanso Gardens is located in La Cañada Flintridge and operated by the Descanso Gardens Guild, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, in a public-private partnership with Los Angeles County.
