Senator Portantino’s Gun Violence Prevention Bill Passes Senate Public Safety Committee

Sacramento, California – Today, the Senate Public Safety Committee passed SB 1100 authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino, D – La Cañada Flintridge.  SB 1100 prohibits a person from making more than one firearm purchase within a 30-day period in California and increases the age requirement for purchasing all firearms to 21 years.

“Today, I am proud that this important piece of legislation has passed the first committee. While Washington continues to be unable to pass prudent gun legislation it is imperative that California steps up.  Young people across America are demanding that legislators respond to the crisis of gun violence on campuses. As a dad and a legislator I am determined to build on their leadership and help California act appropriately,” commented Senator Portantino.

SB 1100 has several principal co-authors including Senator Scott Wiener, D – San Francisco, Assembly Members Mike A. Gipson, D-Carson and Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, D-San Diego. The bill is co-authored by the Senate Public Safety Committee Chair Senator Nancy Skinner, D-Berkley and Committee Member Senator Hannah–Beth Jackson, D- Santa Barbara. SB 1100 is supported by the California Chapters of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

“Listening to one of the dads who lost a child to gun violence say that ‘we can never let the violent death of our children become a common occurrence that we accept,’ struck me as a strong admonishment for policy makers to step up. SB 1100 is one effort to respond to that call for help,” concluded Portantino.
