Portantino (D – Burbank) was honored with the Legislator of the Year Award by the American Cancer Society for authoring Senate Bill 987, a life-saving bill signed by Governor Newsom last year. SB 987 ensures a more equitable model of health care for cancer patients. SB 987 addresses significant disparities in cancer patient access by expanding Medi-Cal patient eligibility for necessary clinical expertise and resources.

Sacramento, California – The Select Committee on California, Armenia and Artsakh Mutual Trade, Art and Cultural Exchange chaired by Senator Anthony Portantino (D–Burbank) held an informational hearing on Monday, June 12, 2023 titled California and Armenia: Trade, Technology and Travel Exchange. Topics of discussion included the need for direct flights and increased air cargo capacity between Los Angeles and Armenia, the California-Armenia Trade and Services Desk, and technology incubators in the City of Glendale.

SACRAMENTO – Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank) announced his support of Governor Newsom’s proposal for a 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would guarantee common sense gun safety measures and protections broadly supported by the American public and gun owners. The proposal includes universal background checks, raising the firearm purchase age to 21, instituting a reasonable waiting period for all gun purchases, and banning the purchase of assault rifles for civilians. Senator Portantino will co-author the Senate Resolution that will begin the constitutional amendment process.
