2023 Legislative Accomplishments

Dear Friends and Neighbors,


I am pleased to report that Governor Newsom has signed 14 of my bills into law. I was proud to champion policies that improve our gun safety laws, prioritize mental health, address the teacher shortage, increase safety in our schools and much more.

Below is a list of the bills I authored this year that were signed into law. 

Thursday, October 12 2023

Sacramento, California – Senate Bill 234, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), was signed into law by Governor Newsom. The measure addresses the rise in opioid related deaths by making opioid antagonists such as Narcan readily available in places accessed by high-risk age groups. Senator Thomas J. Umberg (D-Santa Ana) is a joint author of SB 234.

Sacramento, California – Senate Bills 671 and 323, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), were signed into law by Governor Newsom. SB 671 addresses comprehensive school safety procedures and is sponsored by the Glendale Police Department. SB 323 addresses the need for emergency safety procedures in schools.

Wednesday, October 11 2023

Sacramento, California – Senate Bills 712 and 538, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), were signed by Governor Newsom. SB 712 prevents landlords from prohibiting tenants from owning and charging electronic bikes and scooters in apartments. SB 538 requires the Department of Transportation to appoint an advisor on active transportaiton, specifically issues related to bicycle and pedestrian design and safety.

Sacramento, California – Senate Bill 805, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), addresses a serious lapse in the type of autism treatment covered by insurance by expanding care options and modernizing workforce positions to provide better care for parents. The bill was signed into law by Governor Newsom.
