HIV/AIDS Action Summit

During my time in the California State Assembly, I began the HIV/AIDS Action Summit to better inform communities and youth of the prevention, care, and treatment of HIV/AIDS. This year I am preparing for the 11th Annual HIV/AIDS Action Summit on Monday, October 21st at 9am located at USC  Verdugo Hills Hospital’s 4th floor conference rooms (1812 Verdugo Blvd, Glendale, CA 91208).

Each year world renowned AIDS experts, government officials, community outreach groups and medical students participate in discussions regarding the present status and a vision for the future of HIV/AIDS. In years past, our speakers have included: Dr. Michael Gottlieb, who first identified AIDS while at UCLA in 1981; Mondo Guerra from Project Runway; Jake Glaser from the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation; and Dr. Alexandria Levine former Chief Medical Officer for City of Hope.

The summit has also consisted of workshops on the history of HIV/AIDS, public health policy, the spread of AIDS through communities of color and strategized on how non-profits can pool resources to combat the growing HIV positive communities during times of fiscal crisis and uncertainty..

This year’s theme is HIV/AIDS Around the World. Our 3 presentations and one panel discussion will cover HIV/AIDS 101, PEP/PrEP 101, Cultural Competency in testing and treatment, and a presentation by youth advocates with an emphasis on how these topics are viewed, treated, and perceived around the world.

This year’s speakers and panelists include:

Dr. Alexandra Levine, M.D., M.A.C.P., Professor, City of Hope Hematologic Malignancies and Stem Cell Transplantation Institute; Dr. Norman & Melinda Payson Professor in Medicine

Dr. Leo Moore, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health

USC Verdugo Hills Hospital Dr. Armand Dorian, Chief Medical Office

USC School of Social Work Professor Julie A. Cederbaum, PhD, MSW, MP
