Senator Portantino, Chair of the Education Budget Subcommittee, Issues Statement on the Governor’s Revised State Budget Proposal

Sacramento, California –Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) Chair of Budget and Fiscal Review Subcommittee No. 1 on Education, issued the following statement:

“I’m pleased that Governor Brown is continuing to respond to the voices of education advocates to prioritize public education in California. The May Revise is a step in the right direction with many positive developments. A few include an increase of $727 million in Prop 98 and a continued commitment to LCFF with an additional $30 million.

Regarding Higher Education, the Governor continues to refrain from tuition increases and support for Cal Grant stability.  Clearly the May Revision has some good news but it also underscores that there is more work to be done to ensure that our education institutions completely benefit from our current robust economy.

As the Chair of the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Subcommittee on Education, I am particularly happy the budget increases money for both higher education and K-12 LCFF. The budget also includes important and necessary changes to the proposed California Online College. The budget will ensure a total funding of $33.9 billion for all higher education entities and $100 million to each UC and CSU for deferred maintenance.

As the representative of the great 25th Senate District I will continue to fight for quality education for all Californians. I am extremely proud that my home district embodies some of the best public school districts, community colleges and universities in the State. I will continue to work hard to ensure that our students across California have access to high quality and affordable public education."
