Pasadena Star-News: State politicians can hide no longer on sexual harassment

Four years running, pre-#MeToo, the California Legislature killed bills offered up by both a conservative Republican woman and a centrist Democratic man to extend whistleblower protections to legislative employees making complaints about sexual harassment.

During the same four years, when he was in the Assembly, Sen. Anthony Portantino, D-La Cañada Flintridge, introduced similar legislation that died in the lower house.

And now the Senate has also passed SB419, introduced by Portantino, which extends whistleblower protections to lobbyists and other citizens and requires the Legislature to maintain records about allegations of sexual harassment for 12 years. It also, properly, covers racial harassment.
