Sacramento, California – On Sunday, July 24, Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank) received the 2022 Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Award from the Urban Los Angeles National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).   The award was presented to the Senator during a celebration of National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.  Senator Portantino was honored for championing policies that remove the stigma associated with issues of mental health and for authoring SB 224, which expands mental health instruction in schools.

Santa Monica, California - Today, Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 1327, a major gun reform bill jointly authored by Senators Bob Hertzberg and Anthony Portantino. SB 1327 allows private citizens to sue a person who manufactures, distributes, transports, imports, or sells assault weapons, .50 BMG rifles, ghost guns, or ghost gun kits in California.

Sacramento, CA – This week, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 906, a strong and necessary campus safety and gun reform measure authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank). SB 906 prioritizes student safety by promoting safe at-home storage of firearms and mandating robust investigations of imminent violent school threats. Governor Newsom made SB 906 one of his legislative priorities and helped fast track it through the Legislature.

Sacramento, CA – At the invitation of President Biden, Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank) attended the White House ceremony today celebrating the passage of S.2938, the historic Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.  The Act was drafted and passed in the wake of the recent tragic shootings in Texas.  During his speech, President Biden said that “lives will be saved” through the passage of the Act and he further called for a national “safe gun storage effort.”  Senator Portantino authored and passed California’s safe gun storage legislation and currently has SB 906 on the Governor’s desk, waiting signature.  SB 906 calls on school districts to educate parents about safe storage and also requires robust investigations of violent threats made to school campuses.

Sacramento, CA - State Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) announced today that his budget request for Los Angeles Zoo projects was adopted in the 2022-2023 State Budget.  The allocation will be used by the City of Los Angeles to support community-building, biodiversity awareness, protection of endangered species and the development of more accessible and inclusive facilities.
