Local legislators host Senior Scam StopperSM seminar
Senator Wright, Assemblymember Hall convene panel of experts to protect Compton seniors from fraud
COMPTON – Senator Roderick D. Wright (D-Inglewood) and Assemblymember Isadore Hall, III, (D-Compton) will host a free “Senior Scam StopperSM” seminar in Compton on Friday, February 3, 2012, to give seniors the tools to protect themselves from fraud.
Wright and Hall will be joined by the Contractors State License Board in presenting Friday’s seminar at the Dollarhide Senior Center. A panel of experts will discuss a variety of frauds that specifically target older residents in the community, including construction-related scams, identity theft, auto repair and investments.
The seminar will focus on ways seniors can protect themselves, including steps to take when hiring a contractor.
“Unfortunately there people in any community who will take advantage of those they perceive to be ‘easy targets,’ even if that victim is somebody’s grandmother,” said Wright. “I hope we will give seniors in our community the tools and know-how to keep themselves from being victimized and protect the savings they have worked a lifetime for.”
Seniors from Compton and surrounding areas are encouraged to attend Friday’s seminar, which is free of charge. Presenters will include representatives of California Health Advocates (Medicare fraud), the Department of Insurance, the Los Angeles County Department of Consumer Affairs and the Public Utilities Commission. The Dollarhide Senior Center is located at 1108 N. Oleander Avenue in Compton.
Wright will host a similar event in Inglewood on Friday, February 10.
